How to Get Your A/C Ready for the Warmer Months

Spring and summer bring longer daylight hours, fairer weather, and warmer days that can sometimes overheat your home. Before you turn on the A/C to cool things down, check out with the following tips to help you prepare it.

Check the Air Filter

One of the easiest things you can do to optimize your air conditioner is to check your indoor air filters. Over the course of the winter, they may have gathered dust, dirt, and debris that not only block your A/C flow but can spew allergy-causing particulates into your rooms. Instructions for this change are usually located in your unit’s maintenance manual or on the filter itself. Note that some filters require complete replacement while others can be washed or cleaned. Also, pay attention to the airflow direction on the filter and the unit. They both must be going in the same direction.

Check the Cooling Unit

Inspect the hardware itself to ensure everything is clean and attached properly. For example, make sure that the outdoor unit panels are adequately enclosing electrical connections. They may be misaligned or missing due to strong winds, which could cause electrical problems. If you’ve covered the outdoor coil for protection during the colder months, remove any lids, blankets, or covers before starting the A/C. While these covers protect the coil, they also interfere with heat transfer, which could damage your system if left in place. Finally, remove any leaves, branches, or other debris that has fallen on your outdoor coil and your unit. Be sure to look all around the unit, especially in the back.

Call for a Professional Tuneup or Inspection

Proper A/C maintenance requires quite a few more tasks, such as checking for proper refrigerant levels, oiling the motors, calibrating the thermostat, and cleaning the evaporator coils. If you hear strange noises or your unit is not performing up to par, these problems must be addressed before you use the A/C.

The most convenient way to take care of these tasks is to call for a professional inspection or tune-up by Action Heating & Air Inc. A technician will come to your home and take care of your unit more quickly and efficiently than you ever could. It’s best to get this done before the warmer months arrive so your unit will be ready to use when it gets hot.
