Ductless Heating and Cooling: Is it Right for You?

Ductless Heating and Cooling: Is it Right for You?

A ductless heating and cooling system, as you may have guessed, is an HVAC system that doesn't use ducts to circulate air around a house. Instead, it replaces ducts with a smaller system that is typically mounted to a window or to a specially prepared wall. From here, hot or cold air is delivered directly into a room without needing to pass through ductwork first. This system brings several advantages, so let's discuss them!

Advantages to a Ductless System

  • Cost Savings: When air doesn't have to pass through ductwork on its way to a room, the system can become much more efficient. In other words, more electricity is transferred directly into the hot or cold air that reaches the room, so you don't have to spend as much on your energy bills as you normally would. This is particularly true for smaller homes like apartments or open floor homes, where a ductless system can more easily heat or cool the full space.
  • Split System Options: for larger homes with multiple stories or a number of different rooms, you can install a split system that reaches directly into multiple rooms on varying levels, typically with a single outdoor unit that's connected to multiple indoor units. This setup means that you can easily control different "zones" for your heating or cooling, only turning the HVAC on for the rooms you are currently in. This helps save even more money, since you are blowing air into any empty rooms.
  • Excellent Filtration: All HVAC units tend to have some kind of filtration. However, ductless systems offer especially good multi-stage filtration, which can be very effective at removing dust and allergens with the proper maintenance.
  • Easy Installation for Small Units: Ductless system units are typically small and easy to install quickly compared to the larger traditional HVAC units. This decreases installation expenses – and the time you want to wait before the project is finished. It also means fewer cracks and holes in your home through which pests can enter.

Other Considerations for Ductless HVAC

There are also a few considerations and limitations that ductless systems have, which you need to think about before planning on a renovation in your specific situation. Keep in mind that these are smaller units, and a single unit may not work well when trying to heat or cool a large space (and you shouldn't try it since it can waste a lot of energy).

Of course, you can always scale up with a split system, but this invites another serious consideration: Costs, which can quickly rise as your ductless system grows more complicated. A large-scale ductless system may cost more to install than a traditional HVAC system. That's why it's important to get a full and accurate estimate for a ductless project before you make any final decisions.
