Fall HVAC Checklist

Fall HVAC Checklist

Fall’s already here, and before you know it, you’ll be turning on your heating system to warm up your home. That means it’s time to make sure that your HVAC system is all set so that it will run efficiently. Keep the following HVAC maintenance checklist in mind for your home this season.

Clean Up Around Outdoor Units

Debris around your outdoor air conditioning or heat pump unit can make it hard for air to get through. Restricted airflow can lead to excess wear and tear on your system, which could cause it to break down suddenly or reach the end of its lifespan earlier than expected. Your utility bills will also be higher if your HVAC system has to run more often to heat your home. You can prevent this by eliminating vegetation, such as weeds, from around your outdoor unit. You should also keep shrubs and bushes trimmed away from it, and make sure that you have about 2 feet of clear space around your outdoor unit. If you have trees, trim branches to keep leaves from falling inside your outdoor unit.

Change Air Filters

The air filters in your HVAC system get dirty over time due to dust and other debris. This reduces your system’s efficiency and causes it to run more frequently, resulting in higher energy bills. As colder weather approaches, you should take your current air filter out and replace it with a new one. You should check your filter every month and put in a new one as needed throughout the fall and winter. This could mean replacing it every few months or more often. For example, if you have pets, you might need to replace your air filter each month because of hair and dander.

Dust and debris can also get into your HVAC system through your registers and vents. Take time to wipe these down, so that you won’t end up with an HVAC system and ductwork filled with these particles. Otherwise, the dust and debris that gets inside them can lower your indoor air quality.

Clean Your Registers

Dust and debris can also get into your HVAC system through your registers and vents. Take time to wipe these down, so that you won’t end up with an HVAC system and ductwork filled with these particles. Otherwise, the dust and debris that gets inside them can lower your indoor air quality.

Schedule Maintenance with Your Local HVAC Company

Just as cars need regular tune-ups, your HVAC system also needs routine maintenance to operate at maximum efficiency. During routine maintenance visits, HVAC technicians will inspect your system, clean it and do other tasks that help it stay in good condition. Having your HVAC system maintained now means that it will be ready for the heating season. Keep in mind that routine maintenance also reduces the risk of running into unexpected issues with your HVAC system during fall or winter.
