5 A/C Tips For Summer

5 A/C Tips For Summer

As the months heat up, an efficient air conditioner quickly becomes a priority in many homes. But if you primarily use the AC during spring and summer, that means that it’s been sitting unused for a good portion of the year and may need some maintenance. This is also an excellent time to review how you use the cooling portion of your HVAC system, and see if there are more efficient practices that can help cut down on your energy bills!

To help with these issues, we’re going over our top five recommendations for everyone using their AC this year.

Change Your Filters

HVAC systems usually have replaceable filters close to the fan inside the ductwork. These filters generally last for several months or so before they really need to be replaced with a new version. Before you start using your air conditioner to fight off steep summer temperatures, take a minute and replace your filter! A clogged filter will slow down airflow, make your AC work too hard, and make it more difficult to cool down your home.

Call for a Tune-Up

Sometimes, you may not know what kind of filter you need to get. Or parts of your AC unit, like refrigerant levels, need a professional look. Or maybe it’s just been a while since you used the air conditioner and you need an expert to make sure it’s clean, that the fan is working correctly, and so on. That makes this an excellent time to arrange for a professional tune-up and make sure that everything is good to go.

Make Sure Everything is Clean

Clean dust off of all air conditioner components, especially any outdoor components that may have gotten dirty over the winter. This is especially important for all air conditioners that use refrigerant (like heat pumps do) because they rely on heat transference to work – and that means that their finds and blades need to be clean to work properly. Fortunately, a soft cloth and little bit of cleaner can usually get the job done here.

AC units use drainage lines to siphon off the water that forms due to condensation while they are working. It’s important to check your drainage line and make sure it’s still clear and not blocked off by any debris.

This is also an excellent time to make sure the area around your AC unit is generally open and clear.

Switch to an Energy Efficient Thermostat

Today’s smart thermostats excel at efficient heating and cooling. They can learn when a house is active to target cooling to only the times where it’s necessary, and can be set up with great precision for certain types of scheduling. Upgrading from an old thermostat to a smart model is a great way to save money while staying cool!
