How Often Should Your A/C Be Serviced?

How Often Should Your A/C Be Serviced?

When your HVAC system is behaving properly, it’s not usually something you think about much. It’s only when something breaks or doesn’t work – or causes your energy bills to explode – that you start worrying. But with just a little extra maintenance planning, you can help keep your system operating smoothly and avoid any expensive breakdowns…while catching problems early before they turn into disasters.

So, where does an AC maintenance plan begin? We have a few places you should start, including professional services that you should have done at least once a year.

Perform Basic Maintenance Tasks

Not all maintenance needs to be performed by professionals. Your AC filter, for example, is easy to find and can be replaced with a simple purchase at a local department store. Do this a few times a year, and you can ensure your system performance stays steady! Likewise, basic maintenance like clearing debris and dust off of outdoor units can make a lot of difference, and you only need to do it once or twice a year.

Of course, if you can’t really find the time or prefer that an expert deal with it, then you can easily arrange a schedule with one of our technicians to take care of tasks like these, too.

Yearly Maintenance

For general professional maintenance, an annual checkup is usually sufficient for the average AC unit. It’s a good idea to arrange for these inspections in spring before the hotter weather hits and you will be using your air conditioner frequently.

While this yearly maintenance can vary, steps should include a thorough visual inspection, and cleaning anything that needs cleaning. It’s also a good time to mention if your AC unit has been especially noisy lately, as this can indicate problems with the fan or fasteners that a professional can quickly address.

This is also the time to test refrigerant levels in the air conditioner and add or replace the refrigerant with a compatible version. While refrigerant isn’t used up the same way a fuel is, it does need to be replaced from time to time (and leaks can happen), so a technician should keep an eye on it.

Technicians should also include an inspection of your furnace or other HVAC units at this time to make sure everything is working properly – so that you are well-prepared for winter as well.

Special Maintenance and Inspection

This isn’t as common, but there are some situations where arranging a special maintenance session is a good idea. One example is after a renovation, where you may have added new living space to your home or even installed new ductwork: You should have a professional take a look and make sure that your system is still ready for healthy operation, or if you need to make any additional upgrades to keep performance steady. Another example is when purchasing a house – buyers may want to arrange to have their own contractor check out the HVAC system and make sure that there aren’t any undisclosed problems.
