Is Your Thermostat Not Working? Tips for Troubleshooting Your Thermostat

Is Your Thermostat Not Working? Tips for Troubleshooting Your Thermostat

You expect that when you program your thermostat, it will keep your home comfortable and at the temperature you set. If that is not happening, you may wonder if something is wrong with your thermostat. Troubleshooting this device can help you determine if the problem is an easy one to correct, or whether you may need to replace the unit. If your unit is not properly working, follow these steps to troubleshoot your thermostat.

Check the Batteries

If your thermostat is not working, the first thing you should do is check the batteries. If the batteries in your thermostat are dead, your thermostat may not be working. Take off the faceplate from the thermostat and look for the battery housing area. Remove the old batteries and replace them with new ones and see if that solves the problem.

Make Sure It's Programmed Properly

One of the most common mistakes that people make when it comes to a thermostat is not having the thermostat properly programmed. Unfortunately, you may think that your unit is properly programmed, when in reality, it is not, or the settings got changed by someone. This can cause you to think your unit is not working, when it is the settings that are off. Take the time to check your thermostat and ensure it is properly programmed if you think it is not correctly working.

If your thermostat is not working, the first thing you should do is check the unit for any loose or disconnected wires. If you notice that wires are loose or not properly connected, you will want to reinsert them into the unit and/or tighten them up.

Tighten Loose Wires

Next, you should check the unit for any loose or disconnected wires. If you notice that wires are loose or not properly connected, you will want to reinsert them into the unit and/or tighten them up. Most areas have a screw that helps to contain and tighten the wires. Tightening this screw can help to ensure your wires are all properly positioned and held firmly in place.

Look for Signs of Corrosion

Lastly, if your thermostat is not properly working, look for signs of damage or corrosion. If you notice items such as rust, fraying wires or large dings or dents in the unit, you will want to have the unit replaced, rather than attempting to fix it. A damaged thermostat can be a fire hazard and may not function as it should. Replacing the unit helps to ensure your thermostat can properly perform its job, without being damaging to your home or heating and cooling unit.
