Why Is the AC Not Cooling My House?

Why Is the AC Not Cooling My House?

Few things are more frustrating than an air conditioner that isn’t cooling down your home. But sometimes, home AC units run into problems where it seems like they are working, but they are actually failing to lower the house temperature. This is a big problem because it causes wear and tear on the units themselves and raises your energy bill without any results to show for it. Let’s go over some of the most common reasons that air conditioners fail at properly cooling.

Clogged Air Filters

Most AC units in homes have a large air filter that’s used to filter out dust and allergens as air cycles through the ducts. These filters are designed to be replaced every several months or so. But if the filters are forgotten, they become clogged with dirt, which causes several serious problems. Dust and pollen start circling around your home instead of being filtered out, which can cause health issues. Air struggles to move through the filter like it did, so airflow throughout the house slows down, which means rooms aren’t cooled as fast. This makes the air conditioner work harder and longer to get the same results, making it wear out more quickly and use electricity.

This can all be solved by regularly replacing your filter. This is a fairly easy task, but you can also schedule basic AC maintenance to have a professional take care of it for you, too.

Leaky Ducts

Ductwork channels air to and from your air conditioner, linking all the vents in your house. It typically stays unseen in crawlspaces, basements and attics – but that doesn’t mean it’s immune to damage. Ducts can develop cracks and gaps where cool air escapes before it can reach the rooms in the house. This means rooms aren’t properly cooled, and the air conditioner keeps working without anything changing. Ducts can be sealed or replaced to fix this problem, but it’s important to be aware it can happen!

Older AC Units That Need to Be Replaced

When air conditioners grow old, they start struggling to function properly (this can also happen when you have expanded your home and the air conditioner is no longer large enough). That lowers efficiency and is a common sign that your AC unit should be replaced. This may start happening if your air conditioner is 15 years old or older.

Blocked Condenser

The condenser is an important part of the outdoor portion of your air conditioner – but it needs room to breathe. If your outdoor unit is surrounded by brush or covered with debris, it won’t be able to pass heat into the outdoor air effectively, which means air won’t be properly cooled inside your house. Always keep your condenser clean with lots of access to the surrounding air.
